Mental toughness not a hobby but a rule!!

Red blazing siren atop white ambulance steering clear of traffic often runs shivers down our spine. Heart sinks and rises to empathize with the unfortunate one lying in there battling for life . Even a view from a detached perch causes sudden gush of tragic ache to erupt somewhere from sub conciousness stifftening our nerves and constraining our minds.

What if this unserene white vehicle which lingers in our mind even if has paved its way out of our sight was carrying a robust young man quite contrary to the upsurge of our preconceived notions visualising him as old , ailing or accident case. Ofcourse the magnitude of our sympathy would magnify manifold.

Life would take an upside down turn was a thought unconceivable to this optimistic, bright , young boy Somesh in his late 20's. He owes his fit like fiddle disposition to being a basket ball coach owning an academy with his partner. But one fine day was enough for this conciously physically fit person to collapse.

This was the day his partner bought himself a nice fancy car displaying it in academy enjoying the wishes around and more so getting kick out of his partner Somesh's jealousy. This jealousy though just pulled a fine kick for his partner but trenched its way far for Somesh , landing him in complete state of despair and soon laying him in state of acute depression. He was hospitalized on account of acute anxiety attacks, though strong medicines pulled him taking their toll and time.

Unfortunately Mental strength was something he failed to imbibe in all his years of being a sports coach. Actually the hard reality is there is bit of somesh in each one of us.
We collaspe at a slight failure, at a slight insult, at slight mismanagement ,at a slight upliftment of others, crisis is a far fetched phenomenon which surely has pure potential of crushing us on the very day of its advent. Why young people committing suicides? Why heart attacks occurring at age when they are uncalled for? Why a failure lead us towards either collasping or towards committing heinous crimes? Why anyone has the potential of sweeping us off our balanced mind?

The truth is

Your body can stand anything its your mind you have to convince

The acceptance is

when the going gets tough, tough gets going

According to Peter Clough, a leading researcher on mental toughness

"Mentally tough individuals tend to be social and outgoing, as they are able to remain calm and relaxed, they are competitive in many situations and has lower anxiety levels than others. With a high sense of self belief and an unshakable faith that they control their own destiny, these individuals can remain relatively unaffected by competition or adversity".
Mentally tough individuals display following traits. These sectrets are worth replicating/ imbibing to maintain stability of mind.

1. Focus

Leicster soccer team displayed a fairytale come true this year In 1929 this team was among top four and after that its been struggling to be selected in even top 20 ,but this year had been splendid success for them hoping them up in the league of topmost teams. Such stupendous success and rising from nadir to zenith is a pure example of the effect of Focus. If you are focussed on your goals even in times of acute failure and pressure then you are an ultimate achiever , success is just a byproduct.

2. Gratitude

Concentrating on what you possess will save you from unnecessarily poking your nose in other people's affairs. Gratitude is utmost important. Feel content and happy and savour the small moments.

3. Avoid resenting other people's success.

People around get what they deserve and even if they hardly deserve what they've got, it is something out of your control and should not figure in your circle of concern. Do what you have planned to do and never imitate what others are doing for the simple reason that your life goals, personality, aspirations, priorities and resources are different from that of others.

4. Avoid self-pity.

No one is having a perfect dreamy life and everyone gets ups and downs in life. The futile exercise of self- pity results in self doubt and deviation from the future course of action.

5. Resilience

Arunima sinha is the first women amputee to reach Mount Everest. She was a national volleyball player who was pushed from a running train by thieves in 2011 while she was resisting them. As a result one of her legs had to be amputated below the knee. This didn't deter her from fulfilling her dream . The ability to remain optimistic even in face of adversity and quickly adjust to the changing circumstances to accomplish more with fewer resources makes one a clear cut winner in the end.

6. Backup plan in place.

Taking courageous decisions too needs a little thinking about analysing the worst case scenario, and more so mental preparedness for it. Taking a big leap in life might get you ample benefits to reap but even sure shot planning and chances sometimes fall flat, but make sure they do not make you fall on your face, think and get a plan ready in place.. If not a plan then preparedness to witness failure is a must.

7. Ethics in place.

The tendency to reach the desired outcome by hook or crook never pays in the end. As they say, there is no short route to success. Ace tennis player Andy Roddick was No 1 player in 2008 at Rome Masters. He was at match point and was about to win. When the umpire called his opponent for double fault serve. Andy brought to the notice of the umpire that the ball had nicked the line but was in fact in bounds. Roddick went on to lose the match but his honesty has made him famous as an upstanding person who would do the right thing. Pepsico too provides a great example of this . A disgruntled coca cola employee attempted to sell proprietary information to Pepsi. Pepsi received a package with a sample of coca cola and other information. Pepsi immediately informed Coke which contacted the FBI.

8. Do not wait for Divine intervention.

Deepika Padukone recent declaration of her being depressed and asking for professional help by seeking psychologists is all what it took to uplift awareness levels of people that we should not wait for divine intervention to tackle mental haywire , rather should consult a psychologist. Anything which our superstars do or propagate is no more a taboo in our minds. But the truth is the role of a psychologist is quite recognized in developed nations though it's still catching up in our country.

Success has served ultimately on a platter in above mentioned cases as they know that in the long run what takes you beyond horizon is your grit, determination, perseverance, optimism and right attitude in place. Adversities or crises are just challenges, but optimism, ability to just hang in there ,timely and courageous decisions will eventually sail you through tough times. Take care of your mental health, check if it's doing its workout regularly.
